Product introduction
Linear Actuator 12V is built into battery-powered luggage and portable equipment cases, and it drives one mechanism: the latch pin that locks the lid. The lid has to lock itself rather than be latched by hand. The unit sits inside the case rim or in the handle cavity, and its rod is coupled to that pin. Extending the rod drives the pin through the lid keeper and into the base bushing, so the lid is pulled down onto its gasket and stays there; retracting the rod withdraws the pin clear of the keeper and the lid lifts free.
Where the Latch Pin's Travel and Force Come From
| What the case needs | What sets it | This configuration |
| Pin travel | lid keeper thickness + engagement in the base + the gap the lid closes up + clearance at the withdrawn end | 50 mm of rod travel; 10 / 20 / 30 / 50 / 100 mm in the same 16 mm body |
| Breakout force at the pin | friction in the pin's bushings + the side load the compressed gasket puts on the pin + any detent the case adds | 80 N rated, and it is the start-up peak that has to stay under it, not the running force |
| Time for one lock or unlock move | rod travel ÷ rod speed | about 6.3 s unloaded / about 10 s at rated load |
| Holding the lid locked with the pack switched off | static self-locking, no current in the motor | more than 2× the rated thrust (over 16 kg / 160 N) |
| What the case's switch has to handle | voltage and current | 12 V DC standard at 0.64 A; 24 V DC on the same body at 0.32 A |
| Fitting the drive inside the case rim | envelope of the unit | 16 mm outer tube diameter; 124.5 mm retracted / 174.5 mm extended |

Sizing the Latch Pin
The rod has to supply the breakout, not the running force. Three figures off the case drawing add up to the number the pin has to beat.
| Input | Where it comes from | Illustrative example |
|---|---|---|
| Gasket side load on the pin | The compression the closed lid puts on the pin, read from the gasket and lid drawings | 22 N |
| Friction in the pin's bushings | Bushing friction at that side load, summed over the pin's two supports | 9 N |
| Spring or detent in the latch | The latch's own return spring or ball detent, from the latch drawing | 15 N |
| Breakout the rod has to supply | the three inputs, added | 46 N |
| Headroom against this build | 80 N rated, minus the breakout | 34 N - about 42% of the rating in reserve |
The three input figures are an illustrative case, not a measured value for this actuator or for any customer build - substitute the numbers off your own drawing. If the total lands above 80 N, the same 16 mm platform is built at 20 kg (200 N) with the same mounting, and the pin travel is unchanged.
Certifications, Testing and Warranty
Each unit is assembled and load-checked in our own Xiamen factory under an ISO 9001 quality system, and ships with a CE declaration and RoHS documents for the configuration you order. Certificates and the document list are published on the certification page; the tests each production batch goes through are listed on the testing equipment page; and if your purchasing team needs a supplier file rather than a datasheet, start from why customers work with KABASI. Units ship factory-direct, evaluation orders start at a single piece, and every unit carries a 6-month warranty against manufacturing defects.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Does the case stay locked if the battery is switched off or removed?
A: Yes. Static self-locking holds more than twice the rated thrust - over 16 kg - with no current in the motor, so the pin stays seated and the lid stays locked when the pack is switched off, flat or disconnected. The actuator will not release on its own: a case that has to open when the supply drops needs that behaviour built into the latch, with a spring or a manual release.
Q: Can the case's own switch and pack drive it directly, and how often can it cycle?
A: Yes. It is a plain two-wire DC motor drawing 0.64 A at 12 V DC, so the case's reversing switch, a relay pair or a small H-bridge is the entire drive, and the rod speed can be varied with PWM where the controller supports it. One 50 mm move takes about 6.3 s unloaded. Duty is about 10%, so allow a cycle period of at least 63 s - roughly 57 s of pause between moves - which suits a case that is opened and closed a few times a day rather than continuously.
Q: Is 8 kg (80 N) enough for my lid latch?
A: Work it out at the pin: add the friction in the pin's bushings, the side load the compressed gasket puts on the pin and any detent, then check that total against the breakout peak rather than the running force. If it lands above 80 N, the same 16 mm platform is built at 20 kg (200 N) with the same mounting; if the pin has further to travel, the same body is built in a 100 mm stroke.
