Product introduction
An IP56 linear actuator is easiest to understand through one real device: the portion gate of a smart pet feeder. A modern automatic feeder is more than a timer attached to a hopper - a typical unit combines a food hopper, a motorised portion gate, a weighing bowl and - in many models - a circulating water fountain that shares the same housing and the same 5 V power rail. When the feeding schedule arrives, or when the app, the bowl's weight sensor or the built-in camera calls for a portion, the mechanism has to do three things reliably and repeatedly:
- open the portion gate by exactly the same distance every time, so that portion size is repeatable;
- hold that gate against an animal that is actively nosing and pawing at the bowl while the food is dropping;
- stay shut when the appliance is unplugged or the battery runs flat, so that the hopper does not slowly empty itself between meals.
On top of that, the drive sits centimetres away from a water reservoir, it is cleaned with a damp cloth or a light rinse, and it usually runs in a bedroom, a kitchen or a living room - often at 3 a.m. Short stroke, low voltage, position holding, splash resistance and low noise are therefore the real design constraints, and this is precisely the job the KT0905-15L was built for.
How the KT0905-15L works in the feeding cycle
- The controller (timer, app, weight sensor or camera) detects the feeding event and applies 5 V DC to the actuator. Reversing the polarity reverses the direction of travel.
- The rod extends its 15 mm stroke at 2 mm/s, easing the portion gate open to the aperture set by the recipe. Because the stroke is slow, the kibble is metered out rather than thrown, and the 2 kg of push-pull force stays in reserve - a single jammed piece of food does not shear or strip the drive train.
- At the end of travel, the external limit protection board - mounted outside the tube - cuts the motor. The gate therefore stops in the same position on every cycle, and the motor is never left stalling against a hard stop.
- Power is removed, but the gate does not creep: the self-locking drive holds more than 10 kg, so food does not trickle out between meals and a determined pet cannot push the gate open with its nose or paw.
Reversing the polarity retracts the rod and closes the gate. Between cycles, the IP56 sealing and the 304 stainless steel / copper alloy construction keep splash water, dust and food residue out of the drive.
The same mechanism transfers directly to any compact appliance that has to move a shutter, a gate or a latch slowly, hold it firmly, and survive washing: portion-controlled water fountains, outlet shutters on powder or granule dispensers, small latching lids and covers on kitchen and personal-care appliances.

How to Choose Your KT0905 Version
| Thrust type (L) | High-speed type (H) | |
|---|---|---|
| Published example | KT0905-15L / -20L / -30L | KT0905-10H |
| No-load speed | 2 mm/s | 9 mm/s |
| Push-pull force | 2.0 kg | 300 g |
| Choose it when | The load must move deliberately and be held firmly: portion gates, shutters, latches, small valves | The load is light and the movement must be quick: small flaps, covers and deflectors |
Step 2 - pick the stroke from your mechanism, not from the datasheet. Standard strokes are 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 mm. The 15 mm stroke (KT0905-15L) is the version to specify when the gate or shutter needs a short, repeatable travel and the total length has to stay near 69 mm.
Step 3 - check the holding requirement. If the mechanism must stay put when the power is switched off - and if it must resist someone or something pushing against it - the >10 kg self-locking force is the number that matters.
Step 4 - confirm the environment. IP56, 304 stainless steel and copper alloy are specified for damp, dusty or splash-exposed products. In a dry, clean enclosure, the same family can be supplied in other configurations - ask us.
Step 5 - customization. Stroke, thrust and voltage can be adapted to your design, and OEM / ODM projects are supported, from a modified stroke length to a completely new miniature push rod developed for your product.
Integration Checklist
- Size the force with margin. 2.0 kg is the push-pull capability. Leave headroom for linkage friction and for the extra torque a mechanism needs when it starts moving after a long idle period.
- Keep the load in line with the rod. A micro actuator should not carry side load. Guide the gate, shutter or lid on its own rails so the actuator only pushes and pulls.
- Plan the polarity. Direction of travel is reversed by reversing the 5 V DC polarity. Make sure your driver or H-bridge is rated for the 0.2 A protection current plus your controller's own consumption.
- Leave room for the limit board. The limit protection board sits outside the tube. Check its clearance and its mounting position when you design the housing, rather than after the tooling is cut.
- Tell us the rhythm of your product. A micro actuator should be matched to the duty cycle and cycle count of the appliance it drives. Share your expected cycles per day and target service life and we will confirm the right version.
Use, Care and Typical Failure Modes
| Symptom | Usual cause | Prevention |
|---|---|---|
| Gate slowly creeps open, or the stopping position changes | Side load on the rod, or a linkage that has worked loose | Guide the moving part; check the coupling and mounting screws |
| Motor gets hot, or the mechanism cuts out during a cycle | A jam in the gate path drawing current up to the 0.2 A protection threshold | Keep the gate path clear of compacted food or debris; the protection current protects the motor, but the obstruction should still be removed |
| Corrosion or residue at the rod exit | Cleaning agents or food residue left on the surface, or a damaged seal | Wipe with a damp cloth and dry; do not immerse the actuator; avoid abrasive cleaners |
| Noise increases over time | A loose mount, or contamination in the drive train | Check the mounting points; do not open the tube - it is sealed to IP56 at the factory. Contact our engineers instead |
| No movement, or intermittent operation | Reversed or loose wiring, or moisture at the connector | Confirm polarity; keep the connector above the water line of the appliance |
Quality Control, Certifications and the Factory
Every KT0905-15L is built in our own plant rather than assembled from bought-in modules, and checked in-house under an ISO9001:2015 quality management system: material and motor inspection, dimensional measurement, electrical and insulation resistance checks, salt spray corrosion testing and wire bending tests - so dimensional accuracy, motor performance, electrical reliability and corrosion resistance are verified before every unit is packed. The range holds CE, RoHS and TUV certification plus more than 30 national patents, with the certificates available on our certification page. Xiamen Kabasi Electric Co., Ltd. has produced miniature electric linear actuators since 2015 and exports to more than 60 countries and regions - see our about us, testing equipment and why us pages.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is an IP56 linear actuator used for?
A: It is specified when a miniature mechanism has to work in a damp, dusty or splash-prone product. Typical examples are the portion gate of an automatic pet feeder next to a water fountain, an outlet shutter on a dispenser, and small latching lids on kitchen or personal-care appliances - anywhere the movement is short, the supply is 5 V DC and the surrounding product gets wet or wiped down.
Q: Can the KT0905-15L hold its position when the power is cut?
A: Yes. The self-locking force is greater than 10 kg, so the rod stays where it was set with no current being drawn. In a feeder this keeps the portion gate closed during a power failure and stops a pet from pushing it open.
Q: Is the limit switch built in?
A: The limit protection board is mounted outside the tube, not inside the drive train. It cuts the motor at both end positions, which protects the motor from stalling and keeps the stopping position repeatable.
Q: Does IP56 mean the actuator can be washed or submerged?
A: IP56 means dust-protected (5) and protected against water jets (6), so splash, spray and washdown are covered. It is not an immersion rating - the actuator should not be submerged or left standing in water.
Q: Can I order a different stroke or voltage?
A: Standard strokes are 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 mm, and longer strokes can be customized. Stroke, thrust and voltage can all be adapted to your design - tell us the mechanism and the supply available in your product.
